Many of our students have had difficulty learning to read, write and spell our English language. A high percentage of these children were labeled Attention Deficit, Dyslexic, Learning Disabled or Underachievers. Some had been in Special Education classes at their previous schools, and even with this special help they were not progressing. However, when retaught with an intensive phonics-based approach, many students with these labels learn to read, write and spell at grade level or better at the Phoenix Academy of Learning.
We at Phoenix Academy believe that every child who has the mental capacity to get himself to and from school can and must be taught skills that will enable him to read and write his own language.
We are successful because of our curriculum and our small student teacher ratio: 12 - 1. Students are taught to read by a Multi-Sensory Intensive Phonics based approach to spelling, reading and writing - Romalda Spalding’s Writing Road to Reading. Our teachers receive extensive training in this method. In addition to a strong language Arts program, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, Music, Art, and Physical Education are offered. We also offer summer school classes.
Phoenix Academy Day School is not intended to be the child’s forever school, but only until his skills are such that he can function at a high level of achievement in a regular classroom. The average stay at Phoenix Academy is from one to two years.
We opened our doors to one student in January of 1991; and today we can safely say that 2000 students have passed through our doors and we have successfully given them a comprehensive education.

"If your child is behind, get help right away. Research done at the University of Oregon shows that 90% of the children who are behind in reading at the end of the first grade will be even further behind at the end of fourth grade - and there is a high probability these same students will not complete high school."
