Phoenix Academy of Learning

Curriculum

"Teaching reading IS rocket science."

--Louisa Moats
  • Phonics

We begin by teaching all students the Orton phonograms.  From here, students progress according to their ability.  They begin to learn spelling and vocabulary, and then sentence and paragraph writing.  All students learn to proof-read, recopy, illustrate, and perfect their own written work.

    Math

All students are placed at a math level which the student understands and finds success in.  We always focus on basic math facts first and then employ a variety of different math programs depending on the child’s needs.  These programs include Singapore and Saxon Math.  Very few students are at grade level and need to work at a math level where they can comprehend and feel success.

    Other Subjects

Music, Art, and Physical Education are also enjoyed by all students. Social Studies and Science are incorporated into the Language Arts program and are also taught in isolation.

    Classroom Organization & Management

At Phoenix Academy we have multi-grade classrooms.  Our students range in age from 5 to 16 and are supposed to be in grades kindergarten through ninth. Some of them enter Phoenix Academy without being able to write their own names legibiy.  Some cannot count to ten.   Most have lost self-confidence due to academic difficulties.

Children will also have rules and regulation as they need to know what is expected of them. They will have the security of certain boundaries and will be with adults whom they know and trust. They will know that the teachers care for them and have their best interests at heart.

"It is essential that our students work at a level where they are having success. They must work in a relaxed atmosphere with encouragement and praise. As students learn (and relearn) phonics and the rules of the English language they will begin to really believe that they can learn. They will begin to ask questions. They will begin to enjoy reading.  They will also begin to be proud of themselves for all that they have accomplished."
